Global research project

For the past 6 weeks, we have been doing a research in Global and English. I choose to do my project on LGBT. We wrote an essay and make a presentation, this was my essay:

LGBT

What is LGBT

Lgbt is the shorter acronym for LGBTTQQIAAP which means

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, ally, pansexual.

It is shorted down to LGBT which is lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.

Lgbt started in 1988 but from 1968 to 1987 homosexuality was considered a mental disorder.

There are mixed feelings about different sexual preferences because there is homophobia what is the dislike or prejudice against homosexual people. People in the LGBT community are subject to bullying as soon as people find out about it. Younger kids in the community especially because of the time and age and how kids react to people who are somewhat different from them and they could just be joking around or they could have the intent to hurt them. It also hard when you are an adult and you tell a friend or someone you have to meet the that your spouse or partner is someone or the same gender, depended on their views of LGBT it could change their opinion of that person.

What causes homosexuality

So what causes homosexuality. There are different reason that people believe that people are homosexuality. Is it because of genetics or society itself.

There is still no clear answer to what causes homosexuality because with the genetics there are male twins when one is gay while the other is straight.

Genetics do have a role to play when it comes to a male be homosexual. The male fetus has proteins(only males have these proteins) on their Y chromosomes called H-Y chromosomes antigens. It is possible that these antigens help develop heterosexual orientation in males because you don’t find H-Y antigens in the mother's body, so because the mother's body doesn't have them this triggers the production of maternal antibodies which join with the H-Y antigens and stop them from functioning. There isn’t a solid reason for what causes homosexuality and if there was this is only for males, not both genders. New research into homosexuality. Maternal immune may play a key role in the development of homosexuality in males. Sometimes mothers immune system treats certain male proteins made by the fetus like a foreign pathogen and tries to attack them in result homosexual orientation. The researchers recruited approximately 130 mothers and classified them on the basis of what kind of children they had. Those who had at least 1 gay son (n = 54), and those who only had heterosexual sons (n = 72). These mothers were asked about their age, pregnancy history (numbers of miscarriages, stillbirths, and live births), those with gay male only-children (n = 8), those with gay male offspring that had no older brothers (n = 23), those with gay male offspring with older brothers (n = 23), those with heterosexual male only-children (n = 11), and those with heterosexual male offspring with siblings (n = 61). Mothers of gay males had a greater number of miscarriages. Mothers with gay male children are expected to have more live female children due to the fact of a greater male fetal loss but if mothers with gay male children don't have a greater female to male ratio there is doubt to the explanation. Gay males normally have older brothers. Another piece of information is twins. Identical male twins who share both genetic and maternal-fetal environment only show a concordance rate of homosexuality of 30%. This complicates the maternal immune hypothesis but one of the twins could have been exposed to the immune attack which makes one gay and there other straight

Is it healthy?

Evelyn Hooker's research debunked the myth that homosexuals are less mentally healthy than heterosexuals.

In 1950 Evelyn Hooker studied 30 homosexual males and 30 heterosexual males, they match the two groups by age IQ and their education. None of the men were in therapy at the time of the test. There was three test which measured their patterns of thoughts, emotions, and attitudes. The Rorschach which is when they see inkblots and say what they see as the thematic apperception test(TAT) and the make a pictures story(MAPS). Two Rorschach experts who were unaware of the man's sexual orientation evaluated the men's overall adjustment on a 5 point scale. They classified ⅔ of the heterosexual and ⅔ of the homosexuals it the three highest categories of adjustment When asked to identify which Rorschach protocols were obtained from homosexuals, the experts could not distinguish respondents sexual orientation at a level better than chance. A third expert used the TAT and MAPS protocols to evaluate the psychological adjustment of the men. As with the Rorschach responses, the adjustment ratings of the homosexual and heterosexuals did not differ significantly. Based on these findings, Dr. Hooker tentatively suggested that homosexuals were as psychologically normal as heterosexuals.

When it was a mental disorder

During the time period of 1968 to 1987 homosexuality was considered a mental disorder because nobody knew what was going on it their heads and it wasn’t until Dr. Evelyn Hooker did her research that proved that homosexual people were just as psychology cable as straight people so in 1988 it was officially taken off the mental health list. But once again it was only treated in males, not females.

During the process to help cure them of their disorder(being homosexual) their therapist would so them naked pictures of the same gender why either giving drugs or an electric shock until they could take it anymore. They were then showed pictures of naked pictures of the other gender or sent on a date with the other gender and they thought they were cured then. As bad as the process was at work. In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association(APA) asked all the members attending the convention to vote whether they thought homosexuality was a mental disorder. 5,854 psychiatrist voted to remove it while 3,810 voted to keep it. The APA comprised with this and took homosexuality off the DSM and replaced it with sexual orientation disturbance. It wasn’t until 1987 when homosexuality fell off the DSM. The World Health Organisation (WHO) only removed homosexuality from its ICD classification in 1992 with the publication of ICD-10 in 1992, although ICD-10 still carries the construct of "ego-dystonic sexual orientation". In this condition, the person is not in doubt about his or her sexual preference but wishes it were different because of associated psychological and behavioral disorders.

The religious views on LGBT

You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. (Leviticus 18:22)

‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.

If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them. (Leviticus 20:13)

‘If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads

The bible does say that homosexuality is punishable by death in Leviticus 20:13, and in Leviticus 18:22 it says that it an abomination. If you grew up in a religious family and went to church and actually really believed in god and all that then you probably dislike LGBT people because of how they were spoken about in the bible and because they are apparently going against God.

Why they may be seen differently

People could be seen differently because not everyone one is ok with people being homosexual people with kids could not what their children to see it depend on their age or if the family the parents grew up in it we're against it they could raise their children to believe in it that way too.

There are positive views on the LGBT community as well because there are people you are ok with homosexuality

They could also be seen differently because people don't understand. There is a lot unknown about what makes someone gay. From genetics to birth order or if someone just chooses to be homosexual. Society plays a big part in this because that would stop someone from coming out because they are scared of the reaction they might get either from friends or family but it might also help someone come out because they have support for when they do. How someone became homosexual through genetics is only really explained for males because they have very little idea on what makes a woman homosexual, the Birth order can also affect one's sexual preference but once again it's also just explained for males, not females.

Where it is legal

Argentina(2010) Australia(2017) Belgium(2003) Brazil(2013) Canada(2005) Colombia(2016) Denmark(2012) England/Wales(2013)Finland(2015) France(2013) Germany(2017) Iceland(2010) Ireland(2015) Greenland(2015) Luxembourg(2014) Malta(2017) Mexico(2009) Netherlands(2000) New Zealand(2013) Norway(2008) Portugal(2010) Spain(2005) Sweden(2009) USA(2015) Uruguay(2015)

This country's have all legalised gay marriage but Mexico is only in certain Jurisdictions.

Homosexuality and its views and still changing.

We do have some idea to what causes it but they only did it for males the same way they only try to cure male homosexuality when it was a mental disorder, and when they thought that being homosexual would make you less mentally healthy they straight people they only test males, not females. Overall there will always be people that don't like homosexuality and we may never completely knowing why or what causes it but what we do know it that they are human too.
